Searching
the Handbook: Wildcards
If you use an * or % at the end of the search term to truncate
the term, it will save entering all the possible variations
of the search term. Left-hand truncation (e.g. *nitrate) is
also possible. For example, if you want to see all materials
that contain chlorine, you can type *chlor* in the Name field.
This will retrieve chlorobenzene, bromochloromethane, hydrochloric
acid, etc. Use the ? or _ symbol to indicate a single letter
within a word. You can use a combination of * or % and ? or
_ within a search term. If a Name search produces no hits, try
using wild cards. For example, quartz will fail because the
exact names, alpha-quartz and beta-quartz, are used in the database,
but *quartz will retrieve both substances.
Searching
the Handbook: Emailing Search Results
Once you have conducted a search it is possible to email your
results to yourself or a colleague. When the Search Results
window loads click on the 'Email these results' link at the
top of the list of hits. A dialog box will appear where you
can enter your email details and click the 'submit' button.

Fig 16: Sending and email of search results
You will be informed when the email has been sent. The email
contains a static link which will return you to your search
results online. Note: following this link will
only return you to your search results and not to the Handbook
online. Once you have successfully sent an email, close the
email window.
